Construction. The curettes shall be of three piece construction consisting of a handle and an operative end at each end. Handles shall be of solid or hollow construction as specified on the applicable drawing. The operative ends shall be securely attached to the handle. The interface of the shank and handle shall be smoothly blended with no crevices evident. There shall be no movement, loosening, or separation between the operative end and the handle when the operative end is subjected to an 85 pound (minimum) pull out force, when tested as specified herein.
Finish. The operative ends, including shanks, shall have a mirror or smooth bright finish, except for the surfaces that form the cutting edges which shall have a finely honed finish. The operative ends (entire blade) shall have a sharp cutting edge and shall be free of defects such as coarse grind marks, cracks, gouges, burrs, feathers or other imperfections which affect curettaging performance, when viewed under four power (4X) magnification. Honed portions of the operative ends shall be blended at the shank junction to form a smooth contour. Handles shall have a mirror or bright finish, except for finger grip portions, which shall be serrated or knurled. Finger grip portions of handles shall be free from barbs and shall provide adequate finger grip during use.
Corrosion resistance. The copper sulfate test requirements of ASTM Designation F1089 shall apply to the operative ends. The boil test requirements of ASTM Designation F1089 shall apply to the entire curette (operative end and handle).
Identification marking. Each curette shall be permanently and legibly marked with the applicable style name and instrument numbers. Each curette also shall be marked with the name of registered trade mark of the manufacturer (and contractor, if other than the manufacturer). The word “stainless” shall be marked on the handle to identify the operative ends as stainless. As an alternate to the word “stainless”, the use of a registered trade name identifying the steel as stainless shall be acceptable, provided prior approval is received from the cognizant contracting officer. Curettes of foreign manufacture shall be marked with the country of origin. The manufacturer shall also provide a marking to trace the curettes to the contract and lot from which the instrument originated. All markings shall be on the smooth portion of the handle.
