Autoclavability. The forceps shall not fracture upon opening a number 8 rubber dam clamp ten times a distance of 1/2 ± 1/16 inch, after being ultrasonically cleaned and then subjected to 5 steam autoclave cycles using distilled water at 270 ± 5°F, and 27 ± 1 psi for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Clamping force. The clamping force exerted by the operative points shall be 8 ± 4 ounces in the fully-closed position and 5 ± 1 pounds in the fully extended position when tested as specified herein.
Finish. Each component shall have a matte, bright or satin finish.
Identification marking. In addition to the contractor markings, each forceps shall be marked with the name or trademark of the manufacturer, if different from that of the contractor. The word “stainless” of “ss” shall also be marked on all instruments to identify the steel as stainless. As an alternate to the word “stainless” or “ss”, the use of a registered trademark identifying the steel as stainless shall be acceptable, provided prior approval is received from the cognizant contracting officer. Forceps of foreign manufacture shall be marked with the country of origin. The manufacturer shall also provide a marking to trace the forceps to the contract and lot from which the instrument originated. All markings shall be legible and permanent.
Workmanship. Forceps shall be free from scratches, nicks, cuts and other defects which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability, proper functioning or intended use.
Unit. Each (Ea). One forceps, as specified, constitutes one unit. Each forceps shall packaged in a close fitting container to prevent damage to the operative end.
