The cutting edge shall be free from micro-cracks and shall not contain nicks, feathers, burrs, or jags as specified herein, when viewed microscopically as specified herein. The cutting edge shall not contain any nick 0.004 inch or when measured in any direction. (A nick shall be defined as a chipped-out, broken-out, indented, or bent-out piece of metal or similar gap, indentations or projection). The cutting edge shall not contain any feathers 0.005 inch or greater, nor more than two feathers smaller than 0.005 inch in length. (A feather shall be defined as a thin, turned or curled edge not removed by the finishing process). No two nicks or feathers of the dimensions specified above shall be closer than 1/8 inch apart. Measurement of distance between defects shall be made along a straight line connecting the two defects. There shall be no burrs, jags, or defects other than those as defined herein on the cutting edge. (A burr shall be defined as a piece of metal projection not normally inherent to a smooth uniform surface). (A jag shall defined as several small tooth-like projections, or indentations, individually smaller than a nick, 0.002 inch, and having a total continuous length of 0.015 inch or greater).
Handles and shanks. Finger grip portions of handles shall be serrated or knurled. The handles and shanks shall have a bright finish, except for the serrated or knurled portion of the handle. The serrated or knurled portion of the handles shall be free of barbs and shall provide adequate finger grip during use. The interface of the shanks and handles shall be smoothly blended with no crevices evident.
Corrosion resistance. The copper sulfate test requirements of GG-I-526 shall apply to the operative ends and martensitic and ferritic stainless steel handles. The boil test requirements of GG-I-526 shall apply to the operative ends and all handles. The salt spray test specified for brass composition in GG-I-526 shall not apply.
Identification marking. Each instrument shall be permanently and legibly marked with the instrument identification which shall appropriately identify the instrument as an Orban 1 and 2 or Kirkland 15K and 16K. All markings shall be on the smooth portion of the handle.
Workmanship. In addition to the requirements of GG-I-526, the operative ends shall be free of discoloration, pits, and rounded edges.
Unit. Each (EA). One knife, as specified, constitutes one unit.
