Hardness. After proper stress relieving, the Rockwell hardness of the operative ends shall be C52 to C56 for type 440A, C54 to Cd58 for type 440B, and C56 to C60 for type 440C.
Design and dimensions.
Orban, Number 1 and 2. The knife shall be a double-ended knife of Orban design, number 1 and 2, which has thin double-edged, spear shaped cutting blades. The design, and dimensions of the knife shall conform to Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing no. 24401. Handles furnished shall conform to handle design specified on the drawing (including respective shank design). The knife shall be suitable for use in making initial incisions in dissecting gingival tissue from anterior or posterior regions of the mouth during periodontal treatment.
Kirkland, Number 15K and 16K. The knife shall be a double-ended knife if Kirkland design, Number 15K and 16K, with thin scalene-shaped broad-blades, which shall have a cutting edge around the entire periphery of the blade. The design and dimensions of the knife shall conform to Defense Personnel Center (DPSC) Drawing No, 24401. Handles furnished shall conform to handle design specified on the drawing (including respective shank design). The knife shall be suitable for use in making initial incisions in dissection of gingival tissue during periodontal treatment.
Construction. The knives shall be of three-piece construction. Handles
shall be of solid or hollow construction as specified on the drawing for the
respective handle. Knurled or serrated portions of handles shall be as
specified on the drawing for the respective handle. The operative ends shall be
securely attached to the handles. There shall be no movement, loosening, or
separation between the operative ends and handles when the operative ends are
subjected to an 85 pound (minimum) pull out force when tested as specified
herein.
Finish.
Operative ends. The operative ends shall have a mirror or highly polished blended to form a sharp cutting edge. The cutting edge of the blade of the operative end shall be formed by the junction of the smoothly contoured inner and outer surfaces of the blade. The operative end (blade) shall be free of defects, such as grind marks, when viewed as specified herein. The cutting edge shall be central and uniform. The cutting edge bevel shall be smooth and continuous throughout the entire peripheral length of the blade.
