subgingival curettage during periodontal treatment. The design and dimensions of the curettes and handles shall conform to Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing 24034 for the applicable design and handles designations (A, B, C, D).
Construction. The construction shall be of double-ended construction consisting of a handle and an operative end at each end. The operative ends shall be permanently secured to the handle. The blades of the operative ends of each curette shall face in opposite directions. Handles A and C shall be of solid construction. Handles B and D shall be of hollow construction. Junction of the operative end to the handle shall be smoothly finished and with no crevices evident. There shall be no movement, loosening, or separation between the operative ends shall be securely held in separate chucks or other holding devices. A slowly increasing pull out force, increasing from zero to 85 pounds (minimum), shall be applied to the shank of the operative end. The force shall be maintained at the high value for a minimum of one second. The instrument shall be examined for movement, looseness, or separation of the operative end with respect to the handle. The test shall be repeated for each operative end of the double ended instrument.
Finish. The operative end including shank shall have a smooth mirror or smooth bright finish, except for the surfaces that form the cutting edges which shall have a finely honed finish. The operative end (entire blade) shall have a sharp cutting edge and shall be free of defects such as rough grind marks, cracks, gouges, burrs, feathers, or other imperfections when viewed under four power (4X) magnification. Handles shall have a bright finish, except for the serrated or knurled portion. Finger grip or serrated portion of handles shall be free from barbs and shall provide adequate finger grip during use.
Corrosion resistance. Corrosion resistance tests in shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation F1089. The copper sulfate test shall apply to the stainless steel operative ends and handles. The boil test shall apply to the entire curette (operative ends and handles).
Identification marking. Each curette shall be marked with the identification “MC 13s-14s” or “MC 17s-18S” for the applicable National Stock Number on the smooth portion of the handle. Each curette shall be marked with the country of origin, the name or registered trademark of the manufacturer (and
