Withdrawal. A penetrometer, with a 1.5 mm ball point needle and an arm weight of 50 gm shall be used for this test. A mix of the alginate material, made in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, shall be placed in a Petri dish on a penetrometer plate. The initial setting time shall be determined by nothing loss of stickiness to a dry finger, timed from the start of the mix and tested at 5 second intervals. As soon as the mix sets, the needle shall be adjusted to a firm contact with the top surface of the set alginate which shall be the zero reference on the indicator. Fifteen seconds after the initial set, and each fifteen seconds thereafter, the needle shall be released for five seconds, and the penetration determined by means of the indicator reading. After each test, the needle shall be returned to the zero reference and the Petri dish moved so that a new spot will be tested. This test shall be continued at fifteen second intervals until the needle drops no more than 1.5 mm. The time at which this occurs, measured from the start of mix, shall be the withdrawal time.
Consistency. An impression tray shall be filled with impression material, as prepared according to manufacturer’s instructions. The impression material shall not run out of the tray when inverted for 15 seconds.
Unit. Can (CN). One can containing one pound of impression material as specified, constitutes one unit.
Quality Assurance Provisions.
Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor is responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified in the contact or purchase order, the contractor may use his own or any facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the Government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements.
Records. Records of examinations and tests performed by or for the contractor shall be maintained by the contractor and made available to the Government upon the Government’s request, at any time, or from time to time, during the performance of the contract and for a period of three years after delivery of the supplies to which such records relate.
