The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers headband-mounted loupes providing binocular magnification suitable for use in the dental operatory.
Salient characteristics:
The dental operating magnifier shall be headband-mounted loupes providing binocular magnification, so designed as to permit magnification of work leaving both hands free and the wearing of ordinary eyeglasses and bifocals.
The magnifier shall have a headband formed from a curved, flexible, metal strip slotted on one end and having a threaded stud permanently affixed to the opposing end. The ends shall be rounded. The strip, when brought end to end, stud in slot, shall form a lightweight headband shaped to fit, on adjustment, snugly and comfortably around the head. A size adjustment locknut (thumb nut) shall be threaded to fit the stud and shall be positioned on right side of headband. The locknut, with a suitable fiber washer, shall provide for head size adjustments and securing the final adjustment. A removable metal strip, with locating studs permanently affixed at each end, shall be on the inside of brow portion of headband and shall hold replaceable perspiration gauze strips. The gauze shall serve comfort and cleanliness purposes. Four gauze strips shall be furnished with each unit of issue.
A hinge assembly shall be affixed to the front of headband with two suitable flat-headed screws. The assembly shall be angulated downward toward the work area.
A telescoping assembly (inner and outer tube) shall be adjustable for length and locked after adjustment with a suitable locknut. A suitable small wrench shall be furnished with each magnifier for locknut adjustment purposes. The assembly shall have a hinge unit permanently affixed to each end and shall serve as adjustable (up and down) connecting links to the hinge assembly and the lens adjustment hinge of the lens frame. The hinges shall allow raising the magnifying portion above the operator’s head when not in use and shall allow the magnifying portion to be folded into the headband area for storage purposes.
Lens frame shall be formed from metal rod and shall be open on both the right and left sides for lens removal and replacement. The lens frame shall be hinged for lens adjustments. The lens frame shall accommodate two 5 diopter crown glass lenses, each with a focal length of approximately 7.8 inches (20 cm), providing a magnification of 2.25X. Suitable grooves shall be ground into two opposite edges of each lens providing secure retention in the frame and easy removal from frame. For design purposes, the magnifier shall be as shown in Figure I.
