(Cartridge Form, Hydrocolloid, Agar Type)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-I-36878A.
This commercial item description covers a reversible hydrocolloid impression material in cartridges with dispensing needles.
Salient characteristics:
The material shall be a pink or yellow, reversible, hydrocolloid agar in gel form, hermetically sealed in a clear, glass, 1.8 cc cartridge, delivering a minimum of 1.5 cc of material. When prepared in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions, shall be suitable for taking accurate dental impressions. The cartridges and needles shall be interchangeable with a standard dental syringe 6515-01-010-8761.
The impression cartridge shall be in accordance with figure 1.
Upon liquefication, the hydrocolloid shall form a smooth consistency and shall be compatible for use with high and low density artificial stones. The temperature at which the liquefied material shall set to a gel shall be not less than 35OC or more than 45OC. The compressive strength shall be not less than 2000 grams square centimeter (g/cm2); the strain in compression shall be not less than 4.0% or more than 15.0% between a stress of 100 g/cm2 and a stress of 1000 g/cm2. The cartridges shall not rupture or exhibit leakage when boiled for 15 minutes.
In an assembled syringe, depressing plunger shall extrude tempered agar through 19 and 21 gauge needles. The tempered agar shall not have an unpleasant odor or flavor and shall not contain poisonous ingredients in sufficient concentration to be harmful to human beings when used as directed or in the event of the accidental ingestion of 10 ml.
Each needle shall have a sharpened point at the diaphragm puncturing end and a blunt tip at the dispensing end. Length of both ends of the needle shall be 3/8 ± 1/32 inch. The needle cannula shall be made of corrosion-resisting steel of appropriate temper to permit bending and reshaping. Hub shall be threaded to make a suitable fit with syringe. Each needle shall be furnished clean and completely enclosed within a suitable two-piece plastic immediate container designed to facilitate fitting needle to syringe. The plastic containers shall be color coded in contrasting colors to distinguish between 19 and 21-gauge needles.
