COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CASE, DENTAL INSTRUMENTS (Sterilizing and Storage)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for MIL-C-36260B which is cancelled.
This Commercial Item Description covers a compartmented dental instrument case suitable for holding and autoclaving endodontic instruments, and maintaining them under aseptic conditions.
Salient characteristics:
Material. The dental instrument case shall be fabricated of AISI type 304 stainless steel, except the hinges may be of type 302 or 304 stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899 for chemical composition.
Style, design and dimensions. The dental case shall be divided into 68 small compartments and one large compartment. The cover shall be fastened to the body of the case by two piano hinges. When closed, the cover shall overlap the base on all four sides by approximately 3/8 inch.
The latched cover shall provide a baffle type closure to prevent exposure of the sterilized instruments to ambient air.
The cover shall be provided with a swiveled, “U” shaped Aberdeen barrel latch, designed such that it may be positioned to hold the cover partially open during autoclaving, to permit the flow of steam to all instruments. The hinges shall permit the cover and the base to mate with a snug fit which allows proper alignment of the latch for opening and closing. All components of the case shall fit into their respective positions without the use of excessive force, and shall be properly aligned and secured. Components such as hinges and latches shall operate smoothly. The cover shall have a flush type fit when closed. The style, design and dimensions of the dental instrument case shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing #23377.
Autoclavability. The dental instrument case, in its entirety, shall be properly passivated and shall show no signs of corrosion after being subjected to 10 autoclave cycles at 270° + 5°F and 27 ± 1 psi for a minimum of 20 minutes each cycle.
