Style, design and dimensions. Carvers shall be double-ended. The design and dimensions of the carvers shall conform to Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 24602. Carvers shall be suitable for carving amalgam restorations and wax patterns.
Construction. One piece instruments shall have an octagonal handle. The handle shall be serrated on seven faces and smooth on one piece. The instrument identification shall be permanently and legibly marked on the smooth face.
Three-piece instruments shall have a hollow handle, round in cross section. The handle shall have a smooth portion and a finely serrated or diamond knurled portion. The instrument identification shall be permanently and legibly marked on the smooth portion. The shanks of the operative ends shall be permanently secured in the handle by brazing. The interface of the shank and handle shall be smoothly blended, with no crevices evident. There shall be no movement, loosening, or separation between the operative end and the handle when the operative end is subjected to an 85 pound (minimum) pull out.
Each carver shall be wrapped in neutral tissue or other suitable anti-corrosive material and shall be placed in a close fitting container to prevent damage to the operative ends.
Finish. The operative ends of the carvers shall be finished to provide a sharp edge suitable for carving amalgam and wax patterns. The outer face of the cleoid and discoid ends shall have a bright finish, and the inner face shall have a fine honed finish. The shanks shall be smooth and shall have a bright polished finish. The handles shall have a bright polished finish.
Corrosion-resistance. Corrosion resistance tests in accordance with ASTM F1089 shall be applicable. The entire instrument shall meet the boil test requirement. Stainless steel parts shall meet the copper sulfate requirement.
Identification marking. carvers shall be permanently and legibly marked on the handle of the instrument. Marking shall include the name or registered trademark of the manufacturer or contractor, the instrument number, and the word “stainless”. Instruments of foreign manufacture shall bear the name of the country of origin.
