Sampling for inspection. Sampling for inspection shall be conducted in accordance with MIL-STD-105. Where feasible, the same sample shall be used for the determination of two or more inspection characteristics. The unit of product for inspection purposes shall be one carver. Unless otherwise specified, sampling for examination shall be conducted at inspection level II, AQL 2.5, except for dimensions, which shall be conducted at inspection level S-1, AQL 2.5, and sampling for tests (when applicable) shall be conducted at inspection level S-2. For tests, the acceptance number shall be zero (0) for all sample sizes.
Examination. Examination shall be as specified herein. The carvers shall be examined for defects including, but not limited to, those listed below.
Defects
Style and design of instrument not as specified.
Finish of operative end and shank not as specified.
Finish of handle not as specified.
Dimensions of carver not as specified on drawing.
Edges and corners of handle not free of burrs and sharpness.
Plating of handle (brass handle only) not uniform in appearance.
Plating of handle (brass handle only) not free of blisters, visible porosity, or other defects.
Instruments not free from dirt, oil, polishing compound, or foreign matter.
Identification marking not present, not properly located, illegible, or incomplete.
Examination under magnification. The instruments shall be examined under four power (4X) magnification for the following defects:

Carving edges not properly sharpened.
Operative end not free from coarse grind marks, cracks, burrs, pits, feathers and other imperfections.
Tests. Tests shall be conducted to determine compliance with specification requirements.
