COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY PASTE, PATIENT
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This Commercial Item Description covers a fluoridated preventive paste suitable for use in dental prophylaxis procedures.
Salient characteristics:
The paste shall be a medium grit pumice, non-splattering preventive dentistry paste. The paste shall be capable of removing dental plaque, material alba, and extrinsic stain from tooth structure without undue abrasion, while imparting a polished luster to the teeth. The paste shall be blue in color and have a pleasant mint or tropical fruit flavor.
Physical characteristics. The paste shall contain 50 to 55% by weight of pumice, with 72% of the particles smaller than 43 microns (0.0017 inch), sodium fluoride, with a free fluoride ion content of 1.10 to 1.40% by weight; and a cellulose-silicate-glycerin anti-splatter aqueous binder of suitable consistency.
The paste shall have a maximum Relative Enamel Abrasion (REA) value of 22, a minimum Cleaning Ratio of 205, and a minimum Polish Ratio of 9, when tested by the in vitro methods developed by the Oral Health Research Institute of Indiana University (Indianapolis) School of Dentistry.
Expiration dating period. The paste shall have a minimum shelf life of 24 months from date of manufacture. Not less than 20 months of the expiration dating period shall remain at time of delivery to the Government.
Instructions. Complete and accurate instructions for use of the paste shall be included in each unit package.
Workmanship. The paste shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability, such as separation, settling, and color uniformity.
