The instruments shall be suitable for manipulating plastic filling materials. The No. FP-2A instrument shall be suitable for contouring proximal surfaces of dental amalgam matrix bands.
Constructions. Instruments shall be double-ended, one piece or three-piece construction, consisting of two operative ends and a handle. The operative ends shall be permanently secured in the handle of the three-piece instruments, and the interface of the shank and handle shall be smoothly blended with no crevices evident.
Handle serrations or knurls. The finger grip portion of the handles shall be finely serrated or fine diamond knurled.
Hardness. The operative ends and shank of the instruments shall have a Rockwell hardness of C52 to C56. The handles shall have a Rockwell hardness of C20 minimum, when tested in accordance with ASTM Designation E18 or E92 and E140.
Corrosion resistance. The entire instrument shall be tested for the boil and copper sulfate tests in accordance with ASTM Designation F1089.
Finish.
Operative ends and shanks. Operative ends and shanks of the instruments shall have a bright polished finish.
Handles. The handles of the instruments shall have a bright polished finish, except for the serrated or knurled portion.
Identification marking. The handles of the instruments shall be permanently and legibly marked with the applicable instrument design (or abbreviation thereof) and the instruments number as shown herein, the manufacturer’s name or registered trademark, and the word “stainless”.
