The rubber bands shall be made from live Para rubber or pale crepe rubber. The outside diameter shall be 1/4 ± 1/32 inch, thickness shall be 0.031 ± 0.005 inch and width shall be 0.062 ± 0.005 inch. Dimensions shall be determined by conventional measuring devices (toolmaker’s microscope, suitable scales). The rubber bands shall have a minimum tensile strength of 1300 psi and a minimum ultimate elongation of 700 percent (%). After accelerated aging, the bands shall show no more than 20% loss in tensile strength and no more than a 10% loss in ultimate elongation from the original values. Testing shall be conducted in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards: ASTM D412-83 Rubber Properties in Tension, 26 August 83, and ASTM D572-81, Rubber, Deterioration by Heat and Oxygen, 27 March 81, or the latest edition thereof.
Workmanship. The splint set and bands shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Set (SE) or Package (PG). One arch wire splint set or one package containing 48 dental ligature bands, as specified, constitutes one unit.
