COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
MALLET, ORAL SURGERY, Hand Type, Mead
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal specification GG-M-105D.
This commercial item description covers a mallet for use in oral surgery.
Salient characteristics:
The mallet shall be of Mead design as shown in figure 1 and shall be suitable for use in oral surgical procedures. The mallet shall consist of a handle, head, two retaining rings, and two disks.
The handle shall be securely attached to the head by means of a suitable steel pin along the major axis of the head. The gripping portion of the handle shall be enlarged and convexly contoured to fit the hand. The neck of the handle shall be round.
The head shall be threaded at both ends, have a round cross-section, and accommodate the retaining rings.
The retaining rings shall sit securely, without wobble, on either end of the head when the retaining rings are in place. The exposed surfaces shall be slightly convex. Two spare disks shall be furnished with each mallet.

The mallet shall be autoclavable.
Material. The handle and disk shall be fabricated of solid, general purpose, polyhexamethyleneamide (nylon). The head and retaining rings shall be fabricated from type 416 martensitic stainless steel in accordance with Federal Specification GG-I-526b, dated October 11, 1965.
