COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
HOLDER, NAPKIN, DENTAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Interim Federal Specification GG-H-00575C.
This commercial item description covers a napkin holder suitable to hold linen or disposable paper towels in place.
Salient characteristics:
The holder shall consist of a chain with a clasp attached at each end and protected by a plastic sleeve. The chain shall consist of a series of balls connected by “dumbbell type” links. Clasps shall be the alligator-jaw type, activated by a coated steel spring, and shall be attached to the chain by crimping the end of the clasp. Spring tension shall be such that the jaws can be separated by hand pressure and in such a manner that the jaws hold a napkin when no pressured is exerted. The teeth of the jaws shall intermesh uniformly in the closed position and shall have a minimum of five teeth in each jaw. The spring and pin of each clasp shall tie the jaws together and maintain the pressure to hold the jaws together securely in a closed position. The spring shall be wound to give a spring tension of 10 ± 3 pounds when tested as specified herein. The junction of chain and clasp shall be covered by a hard-durable plastic sleeve. The chain shall be securely crimped in the clasp to avoid slippages and the plastic sleeve shall be permanently fixed to the clasp which secures the chain. Marking of holder with the name or registered trademark of the manufacturer is optional. The chain shall be made of plated brass, or stainless steel. The clasp jaws shall be made of plated brass or plated steel. The clasp pin and spring shall be plated or coated steel wire to protect against corrosion. Holder components shall be smoothly finished, free of burrs or flash to prevent injury. The holder shall be in accordance with figure 1.
Material. The napkin holder chain shall be made of brass, chrome or nickel plated, or AISI 300 series corrosion-resistant steel. The clasp jaws shall be made of chrome-plated brass or carbon steel, chrome or nickel plated. The clasp pin and spring shall be made of steel spring wire suitably plated to protect against corrosion. The clasp sleeves shall be made of rigid, durable, plastic material. Color of clasp sleeves shall be at the option of the manufacturer.
Workmanship. Holder shall be free of defects which detract from its appearance or may impair its serviceability, proper functioning, or intended use.
Unit. Each (EA). One napkin holder, as specified, constitutes one unit.
