COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BUR, DENTURE TRIMIMING
(STRAIGHT HANDPIECE, TUNGSTEN CARBIDE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-B-37811A.
This commercial item description covers three head shapes of tungsten carbide denture trimming burs for use in dental straight headpieces, in the following shapes as specified.
- Flame
- Pear
- Round
Salient characteristics:
Material. The bur head shall be made of cemented tungsten carbide with a cobalt binder. The shank shall be made of AISI 4130 or 4340 steel.
Description. The bur shall be for use in dental straight handpieces for trimming, carving, and finishing acrylic, chromium alloy, and gold alloy appliances. The bur shall be furnished in the shape as specified. The bur shall be of two-piece construction and shall consist of a carbide head securely and permanently welded or brazed to a steel shank. The bur head shall have 18-20 right hand flutes and shall have a finely honed finish with sharp blades. The blades shall be shaped and sharpened to cut at the tip as well as the side of the bur head and to provide automatic chip clearance. The shanks shall be straight and have a smooth or bright finish. The total runout of the bur shall be less than 0.003 inch. The bur head shall have a Rockwell hardness of C43 to C48. The bur shapes and dimensions shall be as shown in figure 1.
Cutting test. Eighteen half-inch cuts shall be made in a 0.020 inch thick brass strip (Brinell hardness 74-81) at 12,000 revolutions per minute and a 2 pound load. The time required to cut the eighteenth one-half inch. In addition, the bur shall show no breakage, bending, or head separation as a result of the test.
Workmanship. The bur shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Each (EA). One bur of the shaped specified, packaged in a plastic vial, constitute one unit.
