COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
AWL, ORAL SURGERY, Wire Passing
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This Commercial Item Description covers awls designed for use in passing wires for treatment of facial fractures and preprosthetic surgery.
Salient characteristics:
Classification: The awls covered by this specification shall be of the following types:
No. 17 – Maxillary
No. 18 – Mandibular
No. 19 – Zygomatic
Material: The No. 17 and No. 18 awls shall be fabricated from class 4, type 410x martensitic stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899.
The No. 19 awl shall be of a two piece construction. The operative end shall be fabricated from class 4, type 440A martensitic stainless steel in accordance with ASTM F899. The handle shall be fabricated from chrome plated brass.
Hardness. The operative end of the awl shall have a Rockwell hardness of C44 to C48 when tested for hardness in accordance with ASTM E18 or E92 and E140.
Style, design and dimensions. The awl shall have a sharp, pointed tip designed for piercing tissue. The wire passing hole shall be located on the centerline of the operative end. The wire passing hole shall be free from burrs and sharp edges. The awl shall be designed for use in passing wires for treatment of facial fractures and prosthetic surgery.
The No. 17 awl shall be designed for use in passing maxillary wires. The No. 17 awl style, design and dimensions shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 22428.
