COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
WAX, DENTAL (Impression)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
Salient characteristics:
This commercial item description covers a dental impression wax used for refining dental impressions.
The dental impression wax shall be suitable for use in refining dental impressions of full edentulous cases.
Material. The impression wax shall be of the formula suggested by the College of Dentistry, State University of Iowa. The impression wax shall be a non-pigmented wax composed of petroleum derivatives, mineral waxes and animal wax. The wax shall be of a color which sharply contrasts with the oral mucosa. The value of flow at 30 degrees Centigrade (°C) shall be 76-85 percent when tested in accordance with the applicable paragraphs of the current American Dental Association Specification No. 4 for Dental Inlay Casting Wax. The wax, at oral temperature, shall be of such body as to accurately copy detail and register muscle and tissue attachments in 3-5 minutes. The wax shall be sufficiently hard and rigid at ordinary room temperature to resist warping and change of detail. The wax shall not have an unpleasant odor or flavor or irritate oral tissues, and shall be compatible with all types of impression material.
The wax shall be furnished in a unit package containing a minimum of 60 grams of wax in a stick form. The sticks shall be nominally 1/4 inch (0.6cm) diameter and 4 7/16 inches (11cm) in length.
Instructions. Adequate and accurate instructions for use shall accompany each unit.
Workmanship. Then dental wax shall be furnished clean and free of particulate matter and free of any other defect which detracts from its appearance or serviceability.
