KNIFE, PERIODONTAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers the following double-ended knives suitable for use in periodontal surgery.
Orban No. 1 and 2
Kirkland No 15K and 16K
Salient characteristics:
General. The knives shall be in accordance with the
applicable requirements of Federal Specification GG-I-526, with the option and
additional requirements specified herein.
Bid sample. Twelve bid samples, which are representative of the knives to be supplied, shall be furnished complete with protocols and satisfactory report of tests performed in accordance with the specification to the Defense Personnel Support Center for evaluation by the Military Medical Services. When tested by periodontists under conditions of normal usage, the knives shall be suitable for use in periodontal surgical procedures. The knives shall be well balanced, with the blade finished and contoured to produce a cutting edge around the blade which will make a sharp, accurate incision when used in dissecting and removing gingival tissue from the anterior or posterior (interproximal and lingual surfaces) regions of the mouth for Orban knives, and when used in the resection of the gingival in all areas of the mouth for Kirkland knives.
Material.
Operative ends. The operative ends shall be class 4, type 440A, 440B or 440C stainless steel.
Handles. The handles shall be fabricated from chromium or nickel plated brass, or martensitic or ferritic stainless steel (class 4, ASTM F899) for the applicable handle design as specified on DPSC drawing 24419 and 24401 for the applicable knife.
