PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY PASTE (FLUORIDATED)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description
Salient characteristics:
This commercial item description covers a fluoridated preventive dentistry paste suitable for use in dental prophylaxis procedures.
The preventive dentistry paste shall be of the following types, as specified below:
Type I – Fine Grit Paste
Type II – Medium Grit Paste
The paste shall be a fluoridated, non-splattering preventive dentistry paste. The paste shall be capable of removing dental plaque, material alba, and extrinsic stain from tooth structure with insignificant splattering and without undue abrasion, while imparting a polished luster to the teeth. The paste shall have a pleasant orange, cherry, mint, or tropical fruit flavor.
Type I paste (fine grit) shall be gold in color and type II paste (medium grit) shall be blue in color. The color additive shall be approved and certified by the Food and Drug Administration under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
Physical characteristics. The paste shall contain sodium fluoride with a free fluoride ion content of 1.10 to 1.40% by weight and a cellulose-silicate-glycerin anti-splatter aqueous binder of suitable consistency.
Type I paste shall contain 25 to 30% by weight of diatomaceous silica with a mean particle size of 8 to 10 microns (0.00032 to 0.00040 inch). Type I paste shall have a maximum Relative Enamel Abrasion (REA) value of 8, a minimum Cleaning Ratio of 162, and a minimum Polish Ratio of 12, when tested by the in vitro methods developed by the Oral Health Research Institute of Indiana University (Indianapolis) School of Dentistry.
