BLOWTORCH, ALCOHOL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-B-36777A.
This commercial item description covers a hand-operated alcohol torch suitable for use in the preparation of various dental prosthesis.
Salient characteristics:
Material. Plastic components shall be fabricated from a rigid, thermosetting, black phenolic plastic material suitable for the purpose intended. The wick cap, nozzle, nozzle mounting insert, fixed valve, air reservoir tapped insert, wick holder, filler cap, and front place, bottom and trigger screws shall be fabricated of brass. Remaining components shall be fabricated of materials suitable in all respects for the purpose intended.
Design and construction. The blowtorch shall consist essentially of a filler cap, wick holder, nozzle holder, alcohol reservoir, air reservoir, and air pump, shown in Figure 1. The blowtorch shall be contoured to fit the operator’s hand while the trigger is being operated. Design of the blowtorch shall be such that tightening the thumbscrew valve shall seal its gasket and the accompanying operation of the trigger will produce a constant flow of air and a steadily projected needlepoint flame. A slight turn or opening of the thumbscrew valve on the nozzle holder shall produce an intermittent or brush type flame suitable for spot-heating. The blowtorch shall be rendered suitable for use as an alcohol lamp by turning the nozzle holder out of the flame area. A rubber ring shall be friction attached to the torch base for shock absorber and protective purposes.
A leather gasket shall be provided on the threaded end of the filler cap to prevent alcohol leakage in the flame burning area. A leather gasket shall be provided on the threaded end of the wick holder to insure a tight seal against alcohol leakage. The wick cap shall rest on the exposed section of the wick, when not in operation, serve as a spare part. The nozzle holder shall consist of a metal male insert partially covered with heat-resisting molded plastic. The alcohol reservoir shall be located in the top section of the torch body and shall be of not less than 90 cubic centimeters (cm3) capacity. The reservoir shall accommodate denatured alcohol base liquids of the type used to reduce shellac. The air reservoir, having a volume of not less than 105 cm3, shall be located in the lower part of the torch body. Compressed air shall be forced into the air reservoir by a trigger-operated air pump.
