MAGNIFIER, (Dental Laboratory)

This commercial item description covers headband-mounted loupes providing binocular magnification.
Salient characteristics:
The magnifier shall be headband-mounted loupes providing binocular magnification, so designed as to permit magnification of work leaving both hands free and the wearing of ordinary eyeglasses of bifocals.
The magnifier shall have a continuous headband adjustable to head size by a knurled knob at back of head. Clockwise turns of the knob shall make the headband smaller and counter-clockwise turns shall make it larger. A comfort band shall be fastened to the front portion of the snaps shall be permanently mounted on the outside snaps. The male portion of the snaps shall be permanently mounted on the outside of the headband and the female portion shall be permanently mounted on the outside portion of the comfort band. The comfort band shall be cushioned with a strip of suitable batting material permanently glued to inside fold of the band. The visor portion of the magnifier shall be fabricated in one piece from lightweight, durable, impact-resistant material and shall afford protective shielding to the right, left, and over the eyes. The visor arms extending past the side shielding shall be attached to the headband on each side with an adjustable pivot assembly. The raising and lowering of the visor shall be controlled by two tension thumb nuts at the pivot points. The lens plate shall be a continuous piece and shall be attached to the front of the visor with two round head, slotted screws with appropriate nuts. The lens plate and the front portion of visor shall afford protection from the direction of the work. For design purposes, the magnifier shall be as shown in figure 1.
The lens plate shall be equipped with two 4 diopter optical glass lenses, each with a focal length of approximately 10 inches providing a magnification of 2X. The lenses shall be securely retained by the lens plate.
Dimensions of the magnifier shall be as follows: Minimum inside circumference of headband shall be 20-1/2 ± 1/8 inches. The total adjustment for size shall be 4 ± 1/8 inches. The width of the headband, excluding knurled knob portion, shall be 1-1/8 ± 1/16 inches. The lenses plate shall be rectangularly shaped, 4 x 1-1/2 ± 1/32 inches, with rounded corners, shall have two openings for lenses, and shall have two screw holes 3-1/8 ± 1/32 inches apart for fastenings. The thickness shall be stepped at screw holes for fitting into and onto the visor. The lenses shall be rectangularly shaped with rounded corners and shall be 1-1/2 x 1-1/8 + 1/32 inches, excluding level. The comfort band shall be 11-1/2 ± 1/4 inches long and shall have sufficient inside width to cover the headband.
