COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
PASTE, PERIODONTAL PROTECTIVE, SURGICAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This commercial item description covers a periodontal paste suitable for use in periodontal surgery to cover and protect the surface of surgical wounds.
Salient characteristics:
The periodontal paste shall consist of a base paste, an accelerator (catalyst) paste, and an emollient (lubricant). When the pastes are mixed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, the mixture shall have a soft plastic consistency and shall be easily molded to any desired shape. The paste shall be easy to apply to a wound and easy to remove from the wound. The paste shall not dissolve in mouth fluids and shall not be dislodged by the movement associated with eating and speaking. The emollient shall prevent the mixed materials from sticking to the hands and lips but shall not retard the set of the paste. No component of the paste shall contain eugenol, asbestos, or cotton fibers.
Materials. Materials shall be of the highest quality throughout and shall be suitable in all respects for the purpose intended. Where applicable, materials shall be in accordance with the requirements of the latest edition of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) or the National Formulary (NF). Any material used in the periodontal paste which is not included in the USP or NF shall be of a quality suitable for dental use.
Base. The base paste shall contain the following ingredients: fatty acids, resins, benzocaine, parabens, and waxes.
Accelerator. The accelerator paste shall contain the following ingredients: mineral oil, petroleum jelly, zinc oxide and other metal oxides.
Emollient. The emollient shall be a silicone based lubricant.
