COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
RONGEUR, DENTAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Federal Specification GG-R-1549A which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers rongeurs suitable for use in surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
The rongeurs shall be of the following types: Mead No. 1A
No. 4A
Material. The rongeurs shall be fabricated of class 4, type 420 or 410x martensitic stainless steel in accordance with ASTM Designation F899 for composition only.
Hardness. The jaws and handles of the rongeurs shall have a Rockwell hardness of C40 to C55. The springs shall have a Rockwell hardness of C42 to C52. The hardness shall be in accordance with ASTM Designations E18 (Rockwell) or E92 (Vickers) and E140.
Design and dimensions. The rongeurs shall be suitable for performing an alveolectomy, breaking down the alveolar process and other surgical procedures, and shall be in accordance with Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing Nos. 20508 and 20509 for style, design and dimensions.
Construction.
Cutting edges. The cutting edges shall be properly sharpened to cut cleanly throughout their entire length, when cutting 0.015 inch cardboard.
Locks. The locks of the rongeurs shall be either lap joint (scissors) type or box lock type. The edges of the joints shall be properly beveled to prevent pinching of the tissue. Pin in lock area shall be flush with the surface of the joint
