Corrosion Resisting Steel
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This commercial item description covers round dental wire suitable for use as a clasp retainer.
Salient characteristics:
Material. The wire shall be fabricated from type 302 or 304 austenitic stainless steel, round wire stock, 1/2 hard temper, and shall be in accordance with ASTM Designation F899 for chemical composition only.
Design and dimensions. The wire shall be (19 gauge) .036 ± .005 inch in diameter. The wire shall be 12 to 14 inches in length.
Tensile strength. The wire shall have a tensile strength in the range from 165,000 to 230,000 psi.
Corrosion resistance. The wire shall show no signs of corrosion when subjected to the boil test only, as specified in ASTM Designation F1089.
Workmanship. The wire shall be straight and free from dents, kinks and other defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability, proper functioning, or intended use.
Unit. Container (CO). One container, containing 5 one foot lengths of wire, as specified, constitutes one unit.
