COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
ABRASIVE, DENTAL (Paste, Aluminum Oxide)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Federal Specification P-A-0086b (DSA-DM) which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers a dental abrasive paste suitable for use as an abrading and polishing agent for plastic teeth and cast metal restorations.
Salient characteristics:
Material. The paste shall consist essentially of aluminum oxide and zinc oxide, incorporated in a water-insoluble base such as petrolatum. The base may contain modifiers, preservatives, and color and flavor additives.
The paste shall contain no harmful ingredients, and shall be pleasant to the taste. The color of the paste shall be light gray. Materials shall be of the highest quality throughout and suitable in all respects for the intended purpose. Any ingredients in the paste which are not included in the Pharmacopeia of the United States (USP) or National Formulary (NF) shall be of a quality suitable for pharmaceutical use.
The paste shall be an all purpose paste for intra-oral and extra-oral milling, finishing, and polishing of plastic teeth and cast metal restorations. The paste shall be removable by brushing with soap and warm water.
Net weight. The net weight of paste in the tube shall be a minimum of 3.0 ounces (85 grams) when tested as specified below.
Consistency. The paste shall not flow or spread more than 1/64 inch under compression when tested as specified below.
