MIRROR, MOUTH EXAMINING
(Plastic Handle, Disposable)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This commercial item description covers a disposable mouth examining mirror suitable for patient use in preventive dentistry programs.
Salient characteristics:
The disposable mirror shall consist of a continuous reflective glass or acrylic disc securely in a one-piece molded plastic frame and handle. There shall be no movement of mirror in frame. To provide for disc security, the top edge of the plastic frame shall be tapered inwardly to provide a force fit. The mirror face shall have a smooth reflective surface free from pits, scratches, cracks, ripples or other surface imperfections affecting reflectivity. The mirror frame and handle shall have a smooth finish free from sharp edges or projections.
The mirror glass shall be of good quality, polished glass or crystal clear acrylic. The composition used shall be capable of withstanding five (5) repeated soap and water washings without dulling the surface of the mirror. The back of the glass shall be coated with chemically deposited silver, protected by a film of electrically deposited copper. The copper surface shall be provided with a heavy coating of water-resistant enamel. The back of the acrylic disc shall be coated with pure aluminum (at least) 99.9%). The glass, silver, copper and enamel interfaces and the acrylic and aluminum interface shall be coated with a water-resistant non-toxic lead free acrylic meeting ASTM D3359 for adhesion. The front and back surfaces of the glass and acrylic shall be flat and parallel. The front surface of the acrylic mirror shall have a poly-film protectant with a tab for easy removal. The reflective surface shall provide a clear undistorted image so that a patient can interpret results of flossing and brushing stained tooth areas under normal unintensified illumination.
