FILE, BONE, (DENTAL, DOUBLE-ENDED) Seldin, No. 11
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-F-36733A which is cancelled.
This commercial item description covers a file of the Seldin design suitable for filing the bone processes of the jaw in oral surgery.
Salient characteristics:
Material. Files shall be fabricated entirely of class 4, type 440A martensitic stainless steel in accordance with ASTM standard F899, for chemical compositions only.
Hardness. After proper stress relieving, the operative ends of the file shall have a Rockwell hardness of C52 to C56, when tested as specified in ASTM E18 or E92. Handles and shanks shall be of proper temper and shall have a hardness suitable for the purpose intended.
Style, design and dimensions. The bone file shall be of Seldin No. 11 design. The two blades shall be contra-angled from the centerline of the handle and shall have deep teeth faced toward the handle for a pull stroke. The design and dimensions of the file shall conform to Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) Drawing No. 10072.
Construction. The file shall be of one-piece or three-piece, double-ended construction. The handle shall be solid. Each file shall be wrapped in neutral tissue or other suitable anti-corrosive material and shall be packaged in a close fitting container to prevent damage to the operative ends.
Finish. The teeth of the operative ends shall be sharp and clean cut with a fine, honed finish. The remainder of the operative ends and the handles and shanks shall have a satin or bright polished finish.
Corrosion resistance. Corrosion resistance tests in accordance with ASTM F1089 shall be applicable. The instruments shall be properly passivated and shall meet the boil test requirement and copper sulfate test requirement.
