BUR, DENTAL Excavating Extra Long Shank (Steel)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers round, dental excavating, extra long shank steel burs suitable for use with latch-type angle handpieces for opening dental pulp chambers to gain access during endodontic procedures and for oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics:
Classification. This specification covers round excavating burs of sizes No. 2, 4, No. 6 and No. 8, as specified (See Notes).
General. Except as noted below, the burs shall be in accordance with ANSI (American National Standards Institute) ADA (American Dental Association) Specification No. 23 for Type I, class 1a burs. In case of a conflict this document shall govern.
Material. The burs shall be fabricated from steel having a minimum tungsten content of 3.00 percent, and a minimum carbon content of 1.00 percent. As an alternate, the burs shall be fabricated from steel having a minimum tungsten content of 0.90 percent, a minimum vanadium content of 0.08 percent and a minimum carbon content of 1.00 percent.
Hardness. The hardness of the bur heads shall be not less than 750 on the Vickers scale (Diamond pyramid hardness) when tested in accordance with ASTM E 92. The bur necks shall be properly tempered to resist fracture or bending during use.
Style, design and dimensions. The bur head shall have a round shape. The bur shall be of one piece construction consisting of a shank, neck and head. The blades shall be uniformly cut and sharp. The overall length of the bur shall be 32 mm ± 0.5 mm. The shank length shall be 22 mm ± 1 mm. The minimum number of blades, head length, head diameter and neck diameter shall be in accordance with ANSI/ADA No. 23.
