COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CARVER, DENTAL (Binangle, Cleoid-Discoid, No. UWD-5)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
Salient Characteristics:
This commercial item description covers a double-ended dental carver suitable for use in carving amalgam restorations in the plastic state, following their condensation in cavities prepared within the teeth.
Carvers shall be of either one-piece or three-piece construction.
Material.
One-piece. One-piece instruments shall be fabricated entirely of Class 4, type 440A martensitic stainless steel as specified in ASTM Standard F899, for chemical composition only.
Three-piece
Handle. The handles of the three-piece instruments shall be brass or stainless steel. Brass shall conform to copper alloy number C26000 of ASTM B135, for chemical composition only. Brass handles shall be chromium-over-nickel plated.
Operative end. The operative ends of the three-piece instruments shall be Class 4, type 440A martensitic stainless steel as specified in ASTM F899, for chemical composition only.
Hardness. After proper stress relieving, the operative ends shall have a Rockwell hardness of C52 to C56 when tested as specified in ASTM E18 or E92. Handles and shanks shall be of proper temper and shall have a hardness suitable for the purpose intended.
