COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
STRIP ASSORTMENT, ABRASIVE, DENTAL (Aluminum Oxide, Metal-Backed)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification GG-S-00783c (DSA-DM).
This commercial item description covers an assortment of abrasive strips suitable for use in dental polishing procedures.
Salient characteristics:
Shall be an assortment of flat metal, abrasive strips coated on one side with aluminum oxide abrasive and one side safeside. The abrasive strips shall be suitable for furnishing restorations in the oral cavity under both wet and dry conditions. The strip assortment shall consist essentially of aluminum oxide abrasive particles bonded to one side of a metal backing and the opposite side a safe side with both faces nickel electroplated. The strip shall be flat and smooth. The coatside surface shall be a closed coat of abrasive particles, uniformly distributed and firmly attached to the metal strip. Style, design and dimensions of the strips shall be as shown in figure 1.
Strip assortment. The strip assortment shall consist of twelve strips, four each of narrow, medium, and wide.
Material. The abrasive shall be 180 grit crystalline aluminum oxide. The strip backing shall be of a low carbon steel, with a carbon content of .08 to .23 percent. The bonding agent shall be electroplated nickel. After electroplating, the steel shall be stress relieved to remove any hydrogen embrittlement.
Performance. The abrasive strips shall show no signs of failure such as breaks or cracks, when subjected to a bend test around a 1/16 round pin or wire.
