COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SEALING, COMPOUND, PULP CANAL, DENTAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers a temporary filling material, suitable for use in sealing access openings to root canals.
Salient characteristics:
Sealing compound shall consist of a mixture of zinc oxide, calcium sulfate, zinc sulfate, glycol-acetate, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride acetate, triethanolamine, and red pigment, in paste form. The sealing compound shall be a non-toxic, ready-mixed temporary filling material, suitable for use in sealing access openings to root canals between treatments. The sealing compound shall be light pink in color.
pH. The pH shall be 6.90 ± .05 when tested in accordance with ASTM E 70, and prepared as specified in test section under pH.
Linear setting expansion. The linear setting expansion shall be 14.2% ± 0.1%, when tested as specified in test section under linear setting expansion.
Working properties.
The sealing compound shall have a plastic consistency. Consistency shall be such that the compound shall stay in place when inserted in the root canal opening.
The sealing compound shall harden and expand upon contact with saliva or water. Rate and degree of hardening shall be such that the patient can chew on the filling 1 hour after it has been inserted. Expansion shall be such that the filling provides a leakproof seal for the access opening to the root canal.
