COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
IMPRESSION MATERIAL, DENTAL (Agar Type)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Interim Federal Specification U-I-00496b (DSA-DM).
This commercial item description covers two types of dental agar tray impression material in gel form, suitable for taking oral impressions.
Type I- Regular Bodied
Type II- Heavy Bodied
Salient characteristics:
The impression material shall be of the type specified in the procurement document for the applicable National Stock Number and Item Identification. The impression material shall be in accordance with ANSI/ADA Specification No. 11 and the following additional requirements:
1. Type I material shall be red in color. Type II material shall be green in color.
2. The compressive strength shall be not less than 5,600 g/cm2 in lieu of 2,500 g/cm2 for type II material.
3. The strain in compression shall be not less than 4.0 nor more than 7.0 percent in lieu of 4.0 and 15.0 percent, respectively, for type II material.
4. The viscosity shall be 1.70-1.80 millimeters per gram for type I material and 1.50-1.65 millimeters per gram, for type II material, when tested as follows: The material (tubes) to be tested shall be placed in a liquefying bath and brought to a rolling boil. Reset timer and boil 10 additional minutes. The material shall be immediately transferred to a storage tank, held exactly within a 155°F to 160°F range, and cooled for exactly 60 minutes. Quickly deposit 40 to 60 grams of unkneaded material from each tube on clean glass plates. Allow the material to seek its own final diameter. Measure the minimum and maximum diameters of each patty or disk in millimeters and weigh (grams) each disk. The viscosity in mm/g shall be the sum of the minimum and maximum diameters, divided by the weight.
