COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
WHEEL SET, ABRASIVE (Rubber, Straight Handpiece)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description covers abrasive-impregnated rubber points and detachable mandrels for use with straight dental handpieces.
Salient characteristics:
The wheel set shall consist of an average of 100 abrasive rubber pointsand two (2) detachable mandrels. The points shall be fabricated of an age resistant rubber, impregnated with silicon carbide consisting of 4 parts grit No. 320 and 6 parts Grit No. 240 by weight. The points shall be cylindrical in shape, and shall conform to dimensions in Figure 1. The points shall have a centered blind hole at one end, and centered to within 0.002 inch of the centerline of the point, to accommodate the mandrel. The points shall be within the Shore Durometer, Scale A range of hardness of 90 to 100.
The mandrel shall be made of corrosion-resisting steel, carbon steel, or alloy steel. The carbon or alloy steel mandrel shall be plated, or rendered corrosion resistant by a suitable coating. The operative end shall be pointed and threaded for secure insertion into the hole of the rubber points and shall engage and hold points firmly and concentrically when in use. The thread may have a longitudinal groove, or “flute”. The non-operative end shall be rounded and be designed for use in standard, straight dental engine handpieces. The mandrels shall conform to either of the designs illustrated in figure 1.
Workmanship. The points shall be symmetrical, smoothly and properly finished, and shall be free from defects which detract from their appearance or may impair their serviceability. Points shall be free of dirt, grease, oil, or foreign matter. Mandrels shall have no burrs or unspecified sharpness. Mandrels surface shall not be stained or discolored. Plated mandrels surfaces shall exhibit no evidence of peeling.
Unit. Set (SE). One set consisting of one hundred abrasive rubber points and two detachable mandrels as specified, constitutes one unit.
