WAX, DENTAL, (Boxing)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification U-W-00138A.
This commercial item description covers dental boxing wax.
Salient characteristics:
The boxing shall be suitable for use as a frame to contain gypsum material in dental prosthetic procedures.
The wax shall be tacky, dark red in color, and shall cohere with finger pressure at room temperature. The wax shall be furnished in sheets from a minimum of 10-7/8 inches to a maximum of 12 inches long, 1-1/2 ± 1/8 inches wide, and 0.05 ± 0.01 inches thick. The layers of wax sheets shall be separated with silicon paper or other similar material.
The wax shall have a softening point between 150.0 degrees Fahrenheit (oF) and 172oF. and shall be determined by method ASTM Designation E28-67 (Apparatus, Ring & Ball, Softening Point By).
The breaking point of the wax shall be determined as follows: a 6 ± 1/8 inch sample at 70.0oF ± 2.0oF. shall be bent in 10 seconds at a uniform rate until it is bend double with the two halves of the specimen in contact for their entire length. The wax shall not fracture.
The working properties of the wax shall be determined by practical performance tests as follows: shall be pliable at 70.0oF ± 2.0oF. yet stiff enough to retain position and shape at 95.8oF ± 2.0oF. and shall be capable of sealing easily to a plaster model with hand manipulation at 70.0oF ± 2.0oF.
The unit of issue shall contain a minimum of one pound of boxing wax. The weight shall be determined by standard measuring instruments.
Material. The boxing wax shall be a uniform mixture of waxes and other ingredients such as resins, combined in proportions that will result in a material processing the physical properties and characteristics specified above.
Workmanship. The wax shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit. Box (BX). One box containing one pound of wax, as specified, constitutes one unit.
