COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
WHEEL, ABRASIVE, (Dental)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification GG-N-258.
This commercial item description covers two grits of ceramic bonded silicon carbide wheels for attachment to standard dental stone lathe chucks suitable for dental laboratory use.
Medium grit
Coarse grit
Salient characteristics:
The grinding wheel shall be composed of silicon carbide crystals free of extraneous materials, fused with a ceramic binder. The medium grit wheel shall contain 180 grit silicon carbide and the coarse grit wheel shall contain 100 grit silicon carbide. The wheel shall be entirely suitable for use with grinding and polishing machine chucks (NSN 6520-00-539-0350 and 6520-00-539-0550) rotating at 3600 revolutions per minute. The wheels of both grits shall be square edge, 2 ± 1/16 inch in diameter and 1/4 ± 1/32 inch in thickness. The wheel shall be reversible and have a drilled metal hub suitable for the purpose intended. The metal hub shall have a hole diameter of .250 + .009, -.000 inch and shall serve as a bushing. It shall be flush with the parallel side faces of the ceramic wheel. Each wheel shall be marked in a plain manner with the manufacturer’s name or trademark, diameter, thickness, bore, grit size and maximum operating speed.
Workmanship. The wheel shall be symmetrically made with chuck holes truly centered and free from defects which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability.
Unit. Each (EA). One wheel of grit as specified, constitutes one unit.
Quality Assurance Provisions.
Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor is responsible for the performance of all inspection, examination, and test requirements as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor may use his own or any other facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection requirements specified herein, unless disapproved’ by the Government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections, examinations, or tests set forth in this description where such inspections, examinations, and tests are deemed necessary to assure supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements.
